Who?:
10 Experts from material science, engineering, biomimetics and biology.
Topic:
Multi-Material Combinations – Addressing Key Questions:
How can we design and implement reliable joints between materials with vastly different mechanical properties—such as plastics and steel—to minimize stress concentrations and ensure structural integrity?
How does nature successfully connect materials with contrasting properties—like tendon to bone—and what biological materials exhibit exceptional or specialized mechanical behavior that we can learn from?
How can combining different materials enhance the overall functionality of a system—whether by adding flexibility, strength, responsiveness, or other performance benefits?
At which scales and in which physical domains (e.g., mechanical, thermal, chemical) do the critical effects of multi-material connections occur—and how can we analyze them using methods such as SEM, µCT, or other advanced techniques?
Gain:
Bring your ideas to live!
Selected concepts will benefit from access to the outstanding resources and capabilities of leading institutes in materials and natural sciences—offering the chance to critically explore your idea on a scientific level and push it toward real innovation.
Timetable:
12:00 to 12:50 (Optional) Guided museum tour to get a first inspiration
13:00 to 13:40 Workshop and participants introduction
13:40 to 14:20 Intradisciplinary (Experts from same fields) discussion and result presentation
14:20 to 14:30 Time for coffee and networking
14:30 to 15:50 Interdisciplinary (Experts from different fields) concept development and discussion
15:50 to 16:00 Next steps and closing remarks
16:10 to 16:40 (Optional) Behind the scenes: Guided collection tour
Food and drinks will be provided during the workshop!
What to bring?:
All participants get a slot of about 3 minutes to present themselves and their work in the context of the above mentioned topic. You can bring presentations, pictures, videos, but preferably exhibits. You can then share your knowledge in greater depth later in the respective sessions.
You are welcome to dive into the topic in advance and give it some thought. However, this is absolutely optional.
